Decades later, despite the many millions spent, the inept government bureaucratic bungling of the management of the Darling River System and attempts to appease the environmental lobby, accompanied by a massive sellout to Chinese owned cotton enterprises upstream, has sent hundreds of farmers broken and severely damaged Australia's inland waterways.

Costello's and the Royal Commission, The Australian, 3 April, 1998.
The editors were perfectly horrified by this story and it did not run, although it was used as background by a reporter David Brearley, who did a great job covering the Commission and later a great job exposing corruption in the psychiatric profession. Eventually the paper treated him as roughly and as contemptuously as they did all their reporters and he left The Australian. Have no idea where he is now.
