ALL fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, nuts, ham and bacon will have to be clearly labelled with their country of origin after Tasmanian farmers scored a victory in their campaign for new labelling laws.
In the Fair Dinkum Food campaign earlier this year, Tasmanian farmers drove tractors through the eastern states before descending on the federal parliament. The lobbying began after McDonalds moved to buy french fries from New Zealand factories rather than from Tasmanian potato growers.

Vibrant and distinctively designed labels on apple crates helped drive Australian apples into Europe and Asia from 1914 to the 1960s, giving this country an edge in one of its most important export industries of early last century.
Labels on fresh food will make a comeback of sorts after a meeting of Australian health ministers in Sydney endorsed new guidelines to enforce country-of-origin labelling of all fresh fruit, vegetables seafood, nuts, ham and bacon.
Food council chairman Chris Pyne said the enactment of country- of-origin standards was good news for consumers. Many people who bought fresh fruit and vegetables thought they were supporting Australian farmers, when in fact the produce came from overseas.

Qantas Freight yesterday called on freight forwarders to collect their inbound freight as quickly as possible to clear space for incoming cargo at terminals in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Mr [Eric Roozendaal] said terminal operator P&O was at 95 per cent capacity and had moved 700 containers to a bonded warehouse, where cargo sits until it has cleared Customs.
Qantas Freight general manager Robert Lugton said: "All four terminals are at critical capacity levels, and delays in the collection of freight over the weekend will have a major impact, particularly at the terminals in Melbourne and Sydney."
