Ms Wake has received more decorations than any other woman in the Allied forces, but they came from Britain, the US and France -- including the French Medaille de la Resistance and Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur.
Ms Wake was brought to Australia from New Zealand by her parents when she was two and fought for the Allies, not Australia, both factors in the Australian Government refusing to decorate her.

Thin, pale-faced, sweating, in that desperate hurry only a junkie knows, hundreds pour into the area every day to score in an already besieged community. That circumstance has been exacerbated by the Government's concerted crackdown on other prime heroin spots such as Cabramatta, making it safer to "pick up" in the interlocking back alleys of [Redfern] than under the nose of cameras and circling police in other parts of town.
It was in 1997 that NSW deputy premier and then minister for Aboriginal affairs Andrew Refshauge issued a statement, after months of chaos around Redfern station, claiming the Carr government had "acted quickly to recent incidents", with former police commissioner Peter Ryan holding a summit to "address thesocial issues affecting Redfern", and
That makes it safer for the thousands of people, mostly university students and office workers, who pass in and out of Redfern station every day. And safer for the local residents, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike.

NSW Fisheries chief scientist Steve Kennelly said the $430,000 project was being driven in part by a growing wish among recreational anglers to be kind to the fish and to conduct themselves in an ethical manner.
NSW Fisheries senior research scientist Matt Broadhurst said the atmosphere among the anglers was very positive. "It was a collaborative exercise between scientists and anglers," Dr Broadhurst said. "It's a win-win situation because we learn more about what the anglers do, and we can provide them with advice on how better to handle the fish." NSW Fisheries Minister Ian Macdonald said the fish would be classified by the various methods of capture, such as bait versus lure and long shanked hooks versus circle hooks.

SIX police officers were injured last night following riots in the Sydney inner-city suburb of Redfern over the death of a teenager flung from his bicycle and impaled on a metal fence.
Police in riot gear blocked off Lawson Street in front of Redfern police station as up to 100 people rioted, smashing windows and setting fires in the Aboriginal heartland of Sydney. The station was evacuated following what were believed to be threats to set it alight.
"He saw the police and police saw him, but because he wasn't a person of interest to them they continued on their patrols." A pedestrian flagged down passing police and directed them to the injured boy. The teenager was impaled through the chest and neck, according to Mr [Bob Emery], and had convulsions at thescene.
