A COUPLE extradited from Perth are due to appear at Sydney's Central Local Court this morning charged over the murder of boxer Bassam Chami and a friend in Sydney's western suburbs two months ago.
Reports suggested the shooting was part of a drug dealer turf war, but family and community members dispute the claims.
Chami, 26, had been looking forward to making his name on the undercard of last week's Anthony Mundine and Danny Green fight when he was shot dead in the street in Granville. His friend Ibrahim Assad, 27, from nearby Auburn, died from bullet wounds several hours later after undergoing surgery at Westmead Hospital.
Farhad Qaumi, 23, and his girlfriend, Clair Flitton, 30, were reportedly living undercover in a Perth unit after having fled Sydney. Mr Qaumi had allegedly cut off his distinctive mullet haircut and dyed his hair blond.
Heavily armed tactical response group officers and negotiators swooped on the pair in separate locations last Tuesday.
Mr Qaumi has been charged with two counts of murder and one of attempted murder. Ms Flitton has been charged with two counts of accessory after the fact to murder.
Four NSW detectives flew to Perth on Wednesday and successfully applied for the extradition of the pair to Sydney. They were questioned and charged at Surry Hills police station on Saturday. Both have been refused bail.
The shootings were one in a a string of violent incidents in west and southwest Sydney, which led to descriptions of the area as a "war zone".
