Abstract
The swim, from Bondi to Bronte, was to celebrate 100 years of surf life saving in Australia and was supposed to finish at Bronte Surf Life Saving Club, which claims to be the world's oldest surf club.
MORE than 200 people were rescued after being caught in a rip at a Sydney beach yesterday after some 1000 swimmers braved poor weather conditions for a big swimming event.
One man was treated for hypothermia and another for cuts and scrapes.

Chris Chapman, of the Waverley Council Life Guards, said the swim had gone well until the last moments.
He said a dramatic change in conditions and a strong rip had meant about 200 people had been caught needing assistance to get to shore.
In another surf incident, a 30-year-old man, believed to be Korean , was still missing last night after he was swept out to sea at Cape Bank in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney.
