One of the most prominent figures on the professional surfing circuit, Abberton is the third person to be charged over the death of Anthony Hines, whose body was found at the bottom of a cliff at Mistral Point, Maroubra, in August last year.
SYDNEY surfing star Koby Abberton has appeared in court to faces charges in connection with the murder of a standover man last year.
Abberton, a member of the surfing gang the Bra Boys, from the beachside suburb of Maroubra, was granted bail in Waverley Local Court on charges including being an accessory after the fact of murder.
One of the most prominent figures on the professional surfing circuit, Abberton is the third person to be charged over the death of Anthony Hines, whose body was found at the bottom of a cliff at Mistral Point, Maroubra, in August last year.
He is believed to have been shot several times, including in the head, and thrown over the cliff.
Hines's body was lodged under rocks at the base of the cliff for almost four days before being retrieved by police.
Abberton was charged yesterday with being an accessory after the fact of murder, perverting the course of justice, hindering a police investigation and concealing a serious offence.
His older brother Jai Abberton has been charged with the murder of Hines.
Abberton, who lives in Maroubra, was granted bail in Waverley Local Court to next appear at Downing Centre Local Court on March 18.
He has forged a reputation as a fearless surfer on some of the world's biggest waves.
Abberton rarely competes in pro surfing events, instead earning a lucrative living riding waves for photo shoots and videos.
In the past two years he has featured on more surfing magazine covers than any other surfer.
Police believe several other people could further assist them with their inquiries into Hines's death.
